Stoei

We find the words, build the website, and keep it running.

Privacy Policy

We’re Stoei. We build, host and look after websites for small businesses in Louisville, Kentucky and Southern Indiana. This page explains what happens to your information when you use this website. It’s written in plain English on purpose: a privacy policy nobody can read isn’t much of a policy.

What we collect

When you fill in a form. Your name, your email address, and whatever else that form asks for, usually a few questions about your business and your current website. You type it, you send it. Nothing is collected from a form you don’t submit.

When you book a call. Bookings run through Google Calendar’s appointment scheduling. Google collects your name, email and chosen time so the appointment can exist. Google’s own privacy policy covers what they do with it.

When you simply visit. Two things happen automatically:

  • Our web host keeps standard server logs: your IP address, browser, the pages you requested and when. Every web server does this. It’s how a site gets served and how attacks get spotted.
  • Google Analytics 4 records anonymous usage: which pages get read, for how long, and roughly where in the world you are. It doesn’t tell us who you are.

We also use Google Search Console, which shows us which search terms bring people here. It reports totals, never individuals.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell your information. Not to anyone, for any amount.
  • We don’t run advertising pixels, remarketing tags or tracking for third-party advertisers.
  • We don’t add you to a mailing list because you filled in a contact form. If we ever run a mailing list, you’ll have to ask to be on it.
  • We don’t collect payment details on this site.

Why we collect it

The form data exists so we can answer you, and so we know enough about your situation to give you a straight answer about whether we can help. The analytics exist so we can tell which parts of the site are useful and which are wasting your time. The server logs exist because that’s how servers work.

That’s the whole list. If a use isn’t described here, it isn’t happening.

Who else can see it

  • Google, for analytics, Search Console and calendar bookings, as described above.
  • KnownHost, our web host. They store this site, its database and its logs on their servers in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  • KnownHost again, for email. When you send a form, it’s saved on the website and emailed to us, and our email is hosted by KnownHost too.
  • A specialist we bring in, only if you hire us for work they do, such as a logo or photography. We share what that job needs, and only after you’ve said yes.

Each of these is a company we’ve chosen to work with, not a party we’ve sold your data to. Nobody else gets access.

How long we keep it

Form submissions and the emails they generate: we keep them while there’s a live conversation, and for two years afterwards in case you come back. Then we delete them. Copies in our backups disappear within about a month after that, as the backups roll over.

Analytics data: kept on Google’s default schedule.

Server logs: kept as long as KnownHost keeps them, typically a few weeks.

Cookies

This site sets no advertising or tracking cookies of its own. Google Analytics sets its own cookies to tell one visit from another. You can block cookies in your browser settings, and nothing on this site breaks if you do.

Your choices

Send us a message through the contact page and we will, within a reasonable time:

  • tell you what information we hold about you
  • correct anything that’s wrong
  • delete it entirely

You don’t need a reason and you don’t need to explain yourself. If you’d rather not be in Google Analytics at all, Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on that works across every site using it.

Children

This site is for business owners. It isn’t intended for children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes to this page

When the site changes, this page changes with it. The date at the top tells you when it was last updated. We don’t quietly rewrite it.

Getting hold of us

Use the contact page. It reaches us directly, and we reply from a real address. We just don’t publish one here, because published addresses get harvested by spammers within weeks.
